School Supply Boxes for the 2013-2014 school year can now be ordered through June 30th, 2013. All of the BBH Elementary Schools and Central School have changed to a wonderful, local company called 1st Day School Supplies, which is right here in central Ohio.  Just go to the 1st Day School Supplies website, follow the prompts, and your child will be all set for next year. Make sure you follow the directions carefully as it asks for boy or girl for K-2, and last name for grade 3.  Boxes will be available for pick up at Hilton the week before school starts. (Exact dates to be announced this summer.) Please check your boxes upon arrival.  Any questions, please contact Patti Zoeller at patti4848@att.net.

Dear Hilton Family: For my last note as Chairperson of the Habitat Committee I'd like to leave a parting gift for the environment.  Many people ask me about controlling weeds in their yards and whether Round Up is safe to use.  My answer is not one bit!  Yes, it does stick around in the soil and yes, it is harmful to wildlife.  The safest, most environmentally friendly ways of removing weeds are hand weeding, spraying with vinegar and using hot water.  Please see the following link for further information:  http://www.gcbl.org/live/home/landscaping/is-there-a-safe-alternative-to-roundup.

I use hand weeding and vinegar only in the Habitat and have taught these methods to many students over the past three years.  (Exception: the field horsetail infestation was initially too severe to stick 100% with green methods given the manpower I had available.)  Bonus: hand weeding and vinegar spraying can be done by your children.  Students love when I get the vinegar bottles out at Hilton!  Just be sure they don't do this on a windy day and know to only spray the weeds.  Vinegar is a mild acid that will harm any plant.  If your children need an incentive for hand weeding consider paying them a nickel a weed or make a game out of it.  You'll be amazed how many weeds a child can find and pull if you make it a 10 minute race!

Thank you to everyone who helped me rescue the Habitat from the state it was in three years ago.  It took a lot of time, energy and manpower to return it to the beautiful educational garden it is today.  Now let's all work together to keep it that way! Melanie Hauer

Hilton Habitat News! Calling summer volunteers!  The Hilton Habitat is looking for folks to "adopt" it for a week this summer.  It will need to be watered, weeded, mowed, and a few other chores will need to be completed.  Families, scout groups and school clubs looking for service hours are all welcome. Grab a friend and come enjoy the summer flowers, check on class plants, and keep the Habitat looking great.  See the Sign Up Genius to pick your week!
